El Deafo

In this book a child named Cece Bell is a perfectly normal kid. One day her mother finds that she is acting strangely and becoming sick. She is rushed to the emergency room where the doctor says she has meningitis. She is four at this time. Her whole world becomes quiet. Literally. When she comes back from the hospital she takes a hearing test at a professional office. The doctor finds that she is deaf! She gets a special box that she straps to her chest. The cords that are attached to the box are then placed in her ear. This helps her hear better but it’s still hard to understand people. She has to lip read. She is sent to a special class with other deaf children but when she is finished there she has to go to her normal school. She feels so out of place there and she just wants to fit in, but it’s hard to when you have a huge box on you! She feels like everyone is staring at her. Until she finds Martha one friend who acts normal around her. After an accident involving this friend, Martha feels it was her own fault and thinks Cece is mad at her! Will Cece get her friend back or will Martha be lost forever. El Deafo will save the day!!!
